category: just because

As we approach the end of the year and I wind down with my final session of 2009, I’ve been able to reflect on what has been an amazing year full of meeting wonderful new people with a zest for life, and an energy that literally envelops me and lifts me up while I am photographing them. At the end of each session, my mind always buzzes with excitement as I drive back home, doing a mental catalog of my favorite moments and always remembering to be thankful. Because I learn something new every time. Not just about photography, but about life and the one I hope I am reaching towards.

Nancy and Greg laugh loud and often. They are wildly successful not only in their careers but in their relationship with one another. From the moment I stepped into their home, I couldn’t help but feel this sense of giddy anticipation of what adventures lie not too far ahead for them. They are a high-achieving, fun-loving duo, who happen not to take themselves too seriously. And the shoot we had yesterday was  a perfect culmination to the wonderful year in photography that I’ve had. Thank you Greg and Nancy for inviting me into your home and allowing me to capture a snapshot of who you are today.

It has been a great 2009 and there is so much to be grateful for. One of the blessings I’m focusing on today is that photography allows me to engage with people on an entirely different level. It’s personal. And I love that.

There doesn’t always have to be a life-altering reason to have your photos taken. My sister and her husband didn’t have an anniversary to celebrate, a birthday, or any other significant milestone that they felt compelled to document. Since they introduced their baby girl Valentina to the world over a year ago, the dynamics of who they are as a couple, as parents of this little life, have changed them forever in ways I know they never dreamed. And their relationship has flourished.

Last weekend, we spent a couple of hours just focusing on the two of them and the relationship they share today.  It reminded me that everyday there’s a reason to celebrate. Just because.

Here are my favorite images:

While my sister has always said she looks bad in photos, I have to beg to differ. She is ridiculously beautiful! They are both so photogenic!

See what I mean?
