month: July 2009

Today was another day for breaking through boundaries. We photographed nude models today, and while I can’t share those on my blog I just thought I would say a few words about it. I had never done a shoot like this so at first I thought it would be awkward for me to handle. I thought I might freeze up or not know what to do or say! But you know what? It was not as big a deal as I thought it would be; it felt like any other shoot because our models were so comfortable in their own skin. The human figure is so expressive and seeing it bare just amplifies the feeling that can be conveyed. It was a great experience!

Here are a few more photos of the fabulous model Rulan from yesterday:

Wise words from the amazing Elizabeth Opalenik. In the very short time I have been here in Santa Fe, I have learned far more about myself than I had ever believed possible. Elizabeth has guided me to a place where I am starting to understand who I am. I am just beginning to trust myself. I was brought to tears today, acknowledging some things I didn’t realize I had going on. It is hard to explain the things that I’ve felt and experienced because there are no words, just feelings. Today I’ll share just three of the many images I created. It’s late and I’m emotionally spent, but I do want to share!

This first one is a very talented dancer named Michelle… I got that WOW moment the when I first saw the image on my screen!

The next few are images of Rulan, who as you can see is a natural beauty, with a grace and flair that’s all her own…

Scott and Anna… what can I say about them? Their intense love for one another is one of the most immediate things that strikes me about them, and their wedding yesterday reminded me of what it’s all about. There were tears, and laughter, and more importantly, two people who bring out the absolute best in one other and who have been lucky enough to find each other. Anna and Scott, thank you so much for letting me share these moments with you!

These first 2 shots are my favorites of the day:

Isn’t she beautiful?

I loved this moment right before Scott arrived and Anna was getting her veil on… somehow putting that veil on made it feel official to her and she just started tearing up…

Anna and Scott opted to see one another prior to the ceremony which was very cool! She was waiting for him in the backyard garden of his mother’s house when he walked in. This is their first moment seeing each other.

We hopped into the limo and headed downtown for some group shots…

The guys were just too cool for school…

Some of the details. I loved her bracelet!

It was just a bit humid out and Scott’s finger was a little swollen. Anna started cracking up when she tried putting that ring on and it got stuck! It took a moment, but it finally went all the way on :)

Their first dance:

It was my sister’s birthday today (Well - I guess officially it was yesterday, but I am a night owl!) so in honor of that I wanted to share a few pictures. Ok, ok – they are not pictures of my sister. They are of Valentina. But hey, that’s close enough right? She’s a miniature Charmaine! Happy Birthday Char! Hope your day was at least half as fabulous as you are!

We were at Old Orchard mall and Lance decided to take Valentina for a ride on the kiddie train. Truth be told, I think Valentina was his excuse! Who’s more excited here?

“It’s ok Dad, I won’t tell anyone…”

Till next time!

Jaime and Dan met up with me today for an engagement session in University Village. The lighting today was nothing short of perfect, and they were having such a great time together! Can you feel the love, people? Here are some of my favorites:

It’s hard to believe how fast Valentina’s growing up. She’s already 14 months! I wish she could stay this size forever.

Recently, people have been asking me when and how I got started with photography, and for advice as to how they can do the same. Truth is, I find it shocking that people have asked me. I am a newbie. In every sense of the word. I balance my full time day job, MBA school at night, and photography all at the same time. I have managed to get by because I absolutely and truly love each of these 3 things.

Just over a year ago, I had my very first paid session at the Cuneo Museum in Vernon Hills. I connected to Ira through Facebook – she was an old high school friend of mine and I found out she was engaged… Well, we got to talking and Ira and Mike were willing to give me a chance. To this day, I honestly don’t know the reason why! I had never shot any engagement portraits before, so I’m not sure what gave me the courage to say that I could do this, other than the fact that I loved photography and people. Nevertheless, they took a leap of faith in me, paid for the permit to shoot on the property, and were ready to work with me!

I was a ball of nervous energy the night before, trying to envision the types of poses we could try, praying that the lighting wouldn’t be too harsh, even googling “engagement photos” for ideas! I wonder sometimes how Justin puts up with me, because I am SURE I was asking him what he thought of this and that, and talking through any possible situations I might encounter. (Um, can you say, ANNOYING?) Anything that I could use to put my mind at ease. Well, the next day came, and I drove up to the property about an hour early to scope out the scene. I was a woman on a mission. I marched up and down that property, remembering the spots that I thought were the most colorful and had enough shade to make a flattering picture when the sun was out. I found 4 or 5 spots I wanted to try with them, and when they pulled up, I was ready.

As soon as we started, all the nervousness went away, and I just turned into a kid at a candy store, giddy with all the gorgeous scenery we had to work with, not to mention the unbelievable chemistry these two shared. I loved every moment of it.

So, here are my two cents, even though I am just a beginner. If you love what you do, I mean really love it, you will find yourself surrounded by the opportunities to succeed in it. Whatever you truly focus on is what you will succeed in. Sonia Choquette, a famous author and vibrational healer recently tweeted “What we think matters far less than what we love.” I couldn’t have said it any better than this.

And now, for the photos. Thank you Ira and Mike for believing in me!

I’m in such a black and white mood lately!

Of course, the color ones are always lovely (see below)… but I am just digging black and white for a lot of these beach photos.

Oh, B&W how I love thee…
